All About Bees

November 25 @ 10:00 am 11:30 am

Free

Buzz along to hear all about bees and beekeeping.

A repeat of the popular workshop by Lesley Hurst from Bee Awesome He Pi Miharo will show us some simple ideas we can use to help the bees and the basics of getting started in beekeeping. If the weather is suitable, the beehive will be opened for those interested in getting a closer look at these intriguing insects. Beekeeper suits in adult to children’s sizes will be available.

All ages are welcome – qualify for a Children’s University stamp.

Our presenter Lesley has advised us, that if the morning is too cool it is unwise to open up the hive. If this is the case we will cancel the workshop. A decision will be made by 9 am. Please contact us by text or a phone call to find whether the workshop is definitely on or not. Thanks Ruth, 021 074 3905.

Sales table; also donations appreciated to support Bee Awesome and the Community Gardens.

Keep New Zealand Beautiful

September 12 @ 12:00 pm 2:00 pm

Free

We will again be joined by Waterwatch, Wai Kaitiaki to test the water in the Liffey Stream in Lincoln.  The event, is organised with local schools (Pre-school and High School) and each group had its own set of activities all aimed at maintaining an awareness of keeping our environment as pristine as possible.

Kidsfirst Lincoln set about picking up as much rubbish as could be found on the domain surrounding the upper Liffey River. The rubbish collected is then carefully sorted into yellow, green or red buckets.

The High School Group assess the water quality by collecting water from the river and seeing what tiny living creatures are there (indicator invertebrates).  They are also shown how to test water health by measuring oxygen levels with the equipment and expertise provided by Waterwatch. The results of this more elaborate testing on the river water, will be published on our website.

Whilst all the activities are pursued with enthusiasm and interest, it is fair to say that the most interest and enthusiasm is reserved for the lunch provided afterwards, which is very much enjoyed after everyone had endeavored, in their own small way, to keep a part of New Zealand beautiful.

Mini BioBlitz at the Mahoe Reserve

As part of this year’s City to Nature Challenge Ōtautahi we ran a Mini BioBlitz at the Mahoe Nature Reserve in Lincoln. Thanks to everyone that came along to make for a really successful afternoon with around 50 attending; enjoying the hunt for anything that flies, grows, crawls and hides!   The different life forms discovered were catalogued via iNaturalist NZ – Mātaki Taiao.

Grateful thanks to Mike Bowie and several Lincoln University students who were the driving force and did all the preparatory work as well as overseeing the activities.

A great project and I am sure that as long as the City Nature Challenge runs, we will continue to run it each year.
