The trap library will lend you the right type of predator control device to remove problematic pests like rats, hedgehogs, possums and stoats. We can also advise you on bait and the best location for your trap. 

The aim is to remove these predators so the birds and plants can flourish.

The Selwyn Trap Library will open on the last Saturday of every month at the Lincoln Farmers & Craft Market.

How to Propagate Bulbs

A workshop to demonstrate how to propagate the bulbs of plants such as daffodils, to expand flower production. Presented by Jill Reader, Senior Tutor in Horticulture at Lincoln University.

Do you have bulbs growing in your garden that you would like to propagate? Bring along your own bulb(s) and Jill will show you how to chip and take home the finished product. Jill will bring all required equipment. Time will be allowed for questions on general plant propagation.

Jill is also a Member of the International Plant Propagators’ Society (IPPS), Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, and New Zealand Alpine Garden Society.

Lincoln Mahoe Native Reserve Working Bee

Biodiversity Workshop

Presented by Mike Bowie

Mike has worked at Lincoln University as an entomologist for over 30 years on many ecological restoration projects including Quail Island, Mahoe Reserve and Te Ara Kakariki (Greenway Canterbury Trust). He has written many publications in the fields of entomology and ecological restoration, including co-authoring “Backyard Biodiversity in Canterbury”. Mike will demonstrate how to increase the native biodiversity in your garden, section or farm through the use of specific plants, planting designs and refugia. He will also outline ideas for projects that children could undertake or assist with.

Children – challenge Mike by bringing along an invertebrate (insect, bug etc.) you have found in your garden for him to identify.

Selwyn Schools’ Waste Art Competition

Competition and art exhibition that will challenge the way we look at waste.

About this event

Create a piece of art assembled or constructed from previously used materials which otherwise would have likely gone to landfill, the artwork is aimed at making us re-consider our views on rubbish and reusing. 

The competition is open to any individual or pair (not group entries) of artists who is High School or Intermediate age (Year 7-13) attending school in Selwyn or home schooling in the Selwyn District.

Awards & Prizes

Every entrant receives a prize but the aim of the competition is centred around our young people enjoying their artwork and re-thinking the issue of waste and our environment.  Prizes are awarded for first, second and third place, there is also a category prize for best High School and Intermediate entry. We are happy to say that we have been able to match the high value of prizes provided in previous years.

The awards will take place at 1pm on Sunday 27th August and will be presented by Deputy Mayor Malcolm Lyall.  All entries will be taken to be displayed at Te Ara Ātea, Rolleston from 3pm on Friday 25th August and remain on public display until 4pm Sunday 27th August 2023.

Starting & Maintaining a Worm Farm

Worm farming is a fun way to turn your organic waste, such as kitchen scraps, into rich fertiliser for your garden in the form of worm castings and worm tea.

This workshop will be presented by Elizabeth Lovell, the Sustainability Educator at Selwyn District Council. Elizabeth says “Come and see how to create the best worm farm on the block. This beginners’ workshop is suitable for all ages and will cover how to maintain and trouble-shoot common worm farm problems and mistakes. Learn how your organics waste can be transformed into “liquid gold”, and how vermicast can benefit your garden.”

If anyone has surplus tomato or pumpkin seedlings, we are happy to give them a home.

Don’t treat your soil like dirt!

A workshop on the key characteristics of soil, their importance, and how to maintain healthy garden soil.

Soil is the foundation of a healthy garden, whether it is a lawn, a vegetable garden or a simple flower garden.

Roger McLenaghen of Lincoln University will present the workshop at the Lincoln Envirotown Community Gardens.                                         

Roger is a Senior Tutor in the Soil Science Department. He is responsible for the soil science laboratories for undergraduate classes, and lectures to Diploma students.

Bring along an icecream container of your vegetable garden soil if you would like to have it assessed.

If you know next to nothing about growing vegetables, but would like to get started, this workshop is for you!

It’s much cheaper to grow your own than to buy them!

In just 90 minutes, Graham Burge and Errol Wood will take you through the basics of bed preparation, planting seeds and seedlings, and the maintenance requirements (weeding, thinning, watering, etc.).
