Garden Composting

August 24 @ 10:30 am 11:30 am

Free Gold coin donation appreciated.

Compost is one of nature’s best mulches and soil additives, and you can use it instead of commercial fertilisers. Best of all, compost is cheap. You can make it without spending a cent. Compost in your garden improves its soil structure, texture, and aeration, and increases the soil’s water-holding capacity. It’s also a great way of getting rid of your kitchen scraps and garden waste.

Our presenters, Errol Wood and David Grantham, will cover:

  • Getting started – it’s easier than you think!
  • How to construct a compost heap – the options
  • Which materials may (or should not) be composted?
  • Moisture requirements for efficient composting
  • The pros and cons of ‘cool’ or ‘hot’ composting
  • The “Bokashi option”

Do you have a toaster that’s lost its spark?  Is your bicycle gathering dust in the garage? Don’t toss them out just yet!

We’re excited to announce a Repair Café event, where we’re giving new life to your ageing or broken items.

We aim to have skilled volunteers on hand to help repair a variety of items, from bikes to electronics, clothing to household appliances, and more. Here’s what we’ve got so far:

  • Electrical & Electronics including, Household Appliances: The appliance specialists from Ecotech Services and Molten Media will be able to assist.
  • Bicycle repairs by the expert from Fix ur Ride.
  • Clothing: Our talented volunteer seamstresses will mend your favourite garments.
  • General Repairs: If it’s broken, we’ll do our best to fix it!
  • Scissor and Knife Sharpening, from Selwyn Knife & Blades

Please Register: To help us help you, please register for this free event. Provide a brief description of the issue and the item(s) you need repairing. This way, our volunteer repairers can come prepared with the right tools and parts.  We would appreciate it if items are brought in no later than 1 PM to give our repairers time to take a look.  If you haven’t registered you can still come along on the day.

At our last repair cafe, we achieved 100 successful repairs, including household appliances, clothing, toys, and bicycles coming out of garages and finding their way back to usefulness.  Let’s work together to reduce waste, promote sustainability, and revive your items! We look forward to seeing you at the Repair Café event and giving your belongings a new lease of life.

The next Repair Cafe will be on Saturday 5th October at Te Ara Atea.

Board Game Fun!

Selwyn Timebank has formed a new Board Games Group which now meets regularly.

What a lot of fun and laughter we had during our first get-together! After a quick explanation of Rummukub, two rounds of the game were completed while we nibbled on some snacks and had coffee. A timebank member had brought along Rummikub, among a variety of games that had also been shared. It’s a wonderful opportunity to showcase your favourite board or card games and get others playing them!

All are welcome to come along.

Celebrating Selwyn Businesses’ Sustainable Practices

Celebrating Selwyn Businesses’ Sustainable Practices

We are again looking forward to assessing and celebrating the environmental and community initiatives that our businesses undertake.

Every two years the Trust, organise the Selwyn Responsible Business Awards. The awards are made at a celebratory evening in early November but prior to that our assessors will be available to make short visits to all enterprises who wish to discuss the efforts they are making and receive recognition for these.

Participation is entirely voluntary; last year nearly 80 businesses of all kinds participated. Assessors are always in awe of how much businesses do to remain as sustainable as possible and engage with their local communities. All business endeavours and achievements are recognised. All receive certificates, digital badges and mention in our publicity. The emphasis of the process is on discussing practices and problems, recognising the efforts made, and seeing where more might be done.

We encourage businesses to contact our Responsible Business Coordinator to arrange a short meeting to talk about your practices and potential achievements and for everyone to have these showcased on awards night.

To learn more about the Selwyn Responsible Business Awards and Network contact Maree Hamilton.
