Waste Art Exhibition & Awards

August 13 @ 10:00 am August 14 @ 4:00 pm

Free

Art exhibition that will challenge the way we look at waste.

About this event
On display will be all the entries to this years Selwyn High Schools’ Waste Art Competition.

The exhibits will be on show from 10am on Saturday 13 August until 4pm Sunday 14 August. We are grateful to Deputy Mayor Malcolm Lyall; who will be presenting the awards at 1pm on Saturday.

This event was first held last year and exhibited a genuine concern for the issue of Waste along with high standards of work. It has been a difficult year for schools and students but a pleasing number of them have taken the time to complete projects that will showcase their alternative view of “rubbish” in Art form. “From Bags to Riches” was the imaginative title of piece of art which won 2021’s Waste Art Competition. A dress which led a field of 22 entries was made from used feed bags and bailing twine. We also had an R2D2 constructed from a used gas cylinder and offerings using all sorts of so-called waste materials destined for landfill.

An inclusive Lincoln Envirotown event to celebrate Selwyns’ many keen gardeners in our community, and to promote best practices in vegetable production.

Anyone can participate and there is no entry charge.

Only vegetable gardens will be assessed, not flower gardens, shrubs or fruit trees, unless these are integrated with the garden area.

The emphasis will be on participation rather than winning.  All gardens’ achievements will be celebrated.  Some prizes will be awarded to gardens of special merit.  An awards gathering will be held in early March 2022. Vaccination Passport Required.

Have fun swapping your pre-loved clothes for other quality clothes donated.

Donated clothes will be on display so bring your friends and make an evening  of it.

We are excited that we are able to hold this event, however this year the swap may be a little different from previous events as numbers are limited due to current social distancing rules. This means that if the room capacity is reached, people will have to wait for someone to leave before being allowed in.

VIP tickets have been given to those who dropped off their clothes prior to the event. Those with VIP tickets will get early entry to the event. Sadly, we have no more VIP tickets left (there were not as many as last year due to Level 2 restrictions on numbers).

WAITING LIST: We are now giving out tickets that will allow you priority entry to the event – before those that don’t have a ticket and after the VIP’s.  You will be allowed into the event as soon as numbers allow.

Drop off can be arrangement in Lincoln, Rolleston and Dunsandel. We also have several drop off locations and times listed below, we can be identified by our blue Lincoln Envirotown t-shirt with a fantail on it.

Don’t Treat Your Soil Like Dirt!

A workshop on the key characteristics of soil, their importance, and how to maintain healthy garden soil.

The soil is the foundation of a healthy garden, whether it is a lawn, a vegetable garden or a simple flower garden.

Roger McLenaghen of Lincoln University will present the workshop at the Lincoln Envirotown Community Gardens. Roger is a senior tutor in the Soil Science Department. He runs the soil science laboratories for undergraduate classes, and lectures to Diploma students.

Bring along an ice-cream container of your vegetable garden soil if you would like to have it assessed.

Gold coin donation appreciated to support the Community Gardens.

Please note the venue for this workshop has changed to Lincoln Baptist Church, 109 Carnavernon Drive, Lincoln 7672.

Unfortunately at Level 2 we are unable to host visitors to the community gardens, we are very lucky that we can still hold this workshop thanks to Lincoln Baptist Church.

Starting & Maintaining a Worm Farm 2021

October 30 @ 10:30 am 11:30 am

Worm farming is a fun way to turn your organic waste, such as kitchen scraps, into rich fertiliser for your garden in the form of worm castings and worm tea.

Our presenter is Lesley Ottey from Eco Educate. Eco Educate provides waste rethinking, help and support across Canterbury.

Lesley is happy for people to make mini worm farms to take home. Just bring two clean ice cream containers of the same size, with a lid that fits one of the containers. Spare newspaper would be good too.

Worms, and flower and vegetable seeds also available for purchase

This workshop is supported by Selwyn District Council.

Gold coin donation appreciated.
