Waste Art Competition & Exhibition – A Celebration of Creativity and the Environment

Waste Art Competition & Exhibition

Art the Challenges the Way We Look at Waste

The exhibition, held at Te Ara Ātea, showcased all entries to the 2023 Selwyn High Schools’ Waste Art Competition. The exhibits were on display over a weekend in August 2023. Our thanks go to the staff of Te Ara Atea for their excellent hosting.

This exciting and enjoyable competition, first launched in 2021, is open to all rangatahi from year 7 to 13, not just those attending high school. The event runs biennially, so keep an eye out for the competition in 2025. The 2021 competition’s overall winner was titled “From Bags to Riches” – a dress crafted from repurposed feed bags and bailing twine. Other notable works included an R2D2 sculpture constructed from a used gas cylinder and various pieces incorporating materials destined for landfills. All entries exhibited remarkable creativity and were deservedly recognised with prizes.

The 2023 exhibition maintained the high standard set by its predecessor, presenting the judges with the challenging task of determining category and overall winners, as well as merit award recipients.

Whakamihi to all the artists for their mahi and originality.

Selwyn Schools’ Waste Art Exhibition

August 26 @ 10:00 am August 27 @ 4:00 pm

Free

An art exhibition that will challenge the way we look at waste.

About this event

All art pieces from this year’s Selwyn Schools’ Waste Art Competition will be showcased. The exhibits will be open for viewing from 10 am on Saturday, August 26th, and will continue to be free to view until after the awards ceremony, which will take place on Sunday, August 27th at 1 pm.

We are honoured to have Deputy Mayor Malcolm Lyall join us in celebrating all entries. Deputy Mayor Lyall will present the awards at 1 pm on Sunday, recognising the talents of our artistic students that have transformed waste into exceptional artworks.

This exciting and enjoyable competition, launched in 2021, has had an outstanding response with over thirty incredible artworks displayed last year of an exceptional standard. We’re excited and hope to see the same level of enthusiasm and excellence this year.

For our talented young artists, this competition isn’t just an opportunity to showcase their skills—it’s a chance to make a difference. Each piece tells a story of transformation, whilst also giving insight into the different views on household waste.

We extend an invitation to all to come and view some wonderful and interesting art over the weekend. You can be part of an event that not only redefines waste but also makes us think about our impact on the world around us.

See you at the exhibition!

Waste Art Exhibition & Awards

August 13 @ 10:00 am August 14 @ 4:00 pm

Free

Art exhibition that will challenge the way we look at waste.

About this event
On display will be all the entries to this years Selwyn High Schools’ Waste Art Competition.

The exhibits will be on show from 10am on Saturday 13 August until 4pm Sunday 14 August. We are grateful to Deputy Mayor Malcolm Lyall; who will be presenting the awards at 1pm on Saturday.

This event was first held last year and exhibited a genuine concern for the issue of Waste along with high standards of work. It has been a difficult year for schools and students but a pleasing number of them have taken the time to complete projects that will showcase their alternative view of “rubbish” in Art form. “From Bags to Riches” was the imaginative title of piece of art which won 2021’s Waste Art Competition. A dress which led a field of 22 entries was made from used feed bags and bailing twine. We also had an R2D2 constructed from a used gas cylinder and offerings using all sorts of so-called waste materials destined for landfill.
